The US in the Middle East: Interests and Dilemmas

This presentation examines various definitions of current American interests in the Middle East and describes strategies and policies to achieve them. Implementation of selected strategies in the past reveal challenges and dilemmas often not anticipated by policymakers. Examples include the “Arab Spring,” the nuclear deal with Iran, the civil wars in the Middle East region, the emergence of the Islamic State and Israeli-Palestinian negotiations.
